Hearing Wednesday On Karabin Petitions (Continued from Page 3) his father at 2611 Swetland St. A second car, a 1975 Dodge Charger which cost $4,623, involves an outstanding car loan of $911 at West Side Bank, the petition adds. Karabin and his ex-wife, Linda, own real estate at 109 Leach Hill Road, South Abington valued at $40,000, the petition states. However, it adds that there is a mortgage of $21,641 on the property. In addition, it is stated that due to the divorce, this property will have to be divided, which would mean that Karabin's share would be $20,000 while his share of the mortgage would be $10,820.

Offsetting this, however, are $9,331 in bills listed in the petition. They include $631 owned Penn Security Bank $1,500 owned to Third National Bank Trust $3,000 owed to Northeastern Bank addition to the car loan; $1,300 owed to Northeastern Teacher Service Organization; $400 owed Scranton N.E. Education Credit Union; $1,000 owed to Master Charge and $1,500 owed to Visa, another national charge account system. The change of venute motion, meanwhile, complains that the "public mind has been enflamed by newspaper articles and newspaper, television and radio reports" concerning Karabin and the various charges against him. It also claims that there is "a violent public prejudice" in the community against him.

Karabin is charged with first and third degree murder, voluntary and involuntary manslaughter, two aggravated assaults and three counts of endangering another person. The charges arise from the March 17 fatal shooting of Gerald Walsh, 24, of 419 14th at North Main Ave. and the North Scranton Expressway; the April 6 shooting of Robert Christiano, 20, of 362 N. Evans Court, in the 100 block of S. the attempted strangulation of Alex 'Hanke, 702 E.

Elm Karabin's ex-father-in-law, last February. In addition, police are known to be investigating a possible tie between Karabin and the Feb. 13 murder of James Shipman, 35, of 61 Cosgrove Place, in an alley right off Main Ave. The first time that there was any suggestion in public that Karabin might have some mental problems was when a hearing on the Hanke assault charges were continued by Magistrate Joseph Eiden due to a letter received from a physician stating that Karabin could not attend due to illness that would require rest and hospital care. However, in a bail hearing, the defense introduced a letter from Dr.

John Lesniak, an Abington area psychiatrist, which held that Karabin was sane. The type study the defense wants to obtain would be an in-depth examination of Karabin by the Farview staff for a period to be fixed by court. If there should be any judicial determination after a sanity study that Karabin is mentally ill, it would halt all other proceedings against him. City Hall Briefs THEFT REPORTED Tubular scaffolding with four wheels, valued at $450, was taken from the site of the new Wes Friedman Co. building at the intersection of the Morgan Highway at Keyser over the weekend, according to John Bowen, the contractor.

Mrs.

Otley, a widow with four children, was sentenced from 92 days to 18 months but was paroled immediately because she already had served the minimum sentence. She had admitted earlier to writing six bad checks for $2,655. The story erred in stating that the checks were written while she was engaged in the operation of the Hen's Nest Egg Farm. Actually, that firm's connection was that it was the supplier of eggs for Mrs. Otley's own retail business.

As part of the sentence, she is to make restitution to the firm. Shiffer, Mrs. Lena Moscow RD 2, a native of Scranton, today from the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave. The Rev.

Rent Hike Rumor Alarms Tenants (Continued from Page 3) don't know how we're going to do it." Paul Berberich and his brother share the expenses on a two-bedroom apartment at the project. Even though they won't be affected by the rent hike until Dec. 31, when their lease expires, Berberich said he plans to protest. "I'm moving out if the rent goes up," he said.

"In fact, I heard there are six apartments and two townhouses empty because people moved out and didn't want to pay the increase." Mary Schoonover, 21, has rented a two-bedroom apartment at Skyview for a year. While she likes the complex, she thinks the rent increase is out of line. "The increase would mean I'd have to pay $189 a month. On top of that, consider a utility bill and a phone bill and I'd end up paying around $225 a month to live here. I might as well go out and find some beautiful place to live, or even get a mortgage on my own home, if I'm going to pay that much," she said.
