Prof. von Knobelsdorff has learnt the fundaments of cardiac surgery and surgical intensive care medicine, followed by a broad education in internal medicine with focus in intensive- and emergency medicine. At Charité University Medicine Berlin, he specialized in cardiology and cardiovascular imaging, especially cardiac MRI. He became known as expert in this evolving field both clinically and scientifically, both nationally and internationally. He taught the method to physicians from all over the world, published articles and book chapters and gave multiple talks. In addition, he gained a lot of experience in echocardiography and cardiac CT. As imaging expert he was appointed to the editorial board of the journal „Die Kardiologie“ and was member of the nucleus of the MRI section of the German Society for Cardiology for many years. In addition, Prof. von Knobelsdorff is accredited as interventional cardiologist with focus on invasive coronary imaging and therapy. He therefore combines unique and profound knowledge both as non-invasive and invasive cardiologist. By working clinically in leading positions at universitary expert centers, Professor von Knobelsdorff gained extensive knowledge and experience in heart failure, heart valve diseases, cardiomyopathies, inflammatory heart disease and arterial hypertension.

Certificates and Memberships

Professor von Knobelsdorff is board-certified for internal medicine, cardiology, interventional cardiology, cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, heart failure and arterial hypertension. Kardiologie im Zentrum (5)Following studies in medicine at the University of Freiburg, internships in Boston (USA), Marseille (France), and residencies in Munich (Germany), Prof. Ischinger relocated to Emory University in Atlanta with the support of a Fulbright Scholarship for specialized training in invasive cardiology (heart catheterization and angiography) and interventional cardiology (coronary angioplasty) withthe pioneer in the field Prof. Dr. Andreas Grüntzig, with whom he collaborated clinically and scientificallyfrom 1981 to 1983.From there, Prof. Ischinger accepted a position as director of Interventional Cardiologyat the St. Louis University School of Medicine. In 1984 he returned to the Heart Center Bogenhausen in Munich. He earned board certificationin internal medicine and cardiology anda Ph. D. degreein 1986. In 1990 Prof. Ischinger was appointed university professor at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. Until 2010 and prior to founding KIZ – Kardiologie im Zentrum – Prof. Ischinger continued to hold the position as senior associate at Bogenhausen Heart Center, responsible for interventional cardiovascular techniques and innovative therapeutic concepts.

Prof. Ischinger is married and father of two adult daughters.

Professional experience

Prof. Ischinger is considered a co-pioneer in the development of interventional cardiology (minimally invasive heart catheter interventions) and one of the most experienced interventional cardiologists in the world. He contributed significantly to the introduction of coronary angioplasty into clinical routine in the early 1980s in the United States.Since then, Prof. Ischinger has gatheredextraordinary practical experience withall available methods. He has personally completed over 10,000 cardiovascular interventions and accompanied many more in a responsible role. Innovative procedures in particular are part of his repertoire:

  • Balloon angioplasty for vascular stenoses(percutaneous angioplasty (PTA)) and percutaneous coronary angioplastyPTCA
  • Stent implantation (e.g. coronary stent, carotid stent, aortic stent)
  • Thrombectomy
  • Implantation of closure devices (umbrella closure) for septal defects, e.g. ASD closures (for atrium septum defects) or PFO closures (for open foramen ovale)
  • Valvuloplasty (balloon angioplasty for stenoticheart valves)
  • Minimally invasive implantation of biological heart valves (percutaneous aortic valve replacement)

The following disorders are treated by minimal invasive catheter techniques:

  • Coronary heart disease (CHD), imminent and acute myocardial infarction
  • Peripheral arterial occlusion (pAVK), e.g. arteries of the upper ond lower extremitiesandiliac arteries
  • Stenosis of the carotid artery (carotid stenosis), stenosis of other vessels that supply blood to the brain, imminent stroke
  • Stenosisof kidney arteries (renal artery stenosis)
  • Disease of the aorta, e.g. aortic aneurysma, aortic dissection (thoracis and abdominal aorta)

Prof. Ischinger is consideredexpert in all interventional and surgical therapies available today for treating cardiovascular disorders. His expertise is in demand around the world. His adviceis sought assecond opinion prior to cardiac orvascular operations or prior tominimally invasive treatmentsfor selection of the optimal therapeutic option(differential therapy) incomplex cardiovascular disorders. In addition, his personal network is oftenused to identify qualified specialists and treatment centers both in Germany and internationally.
