Mentally ill man charged in Colorado Planned Parenthood shooting can be forcibly medicated

  • By COLLEEN SLEVIN - Associated Press

A federal appeals court says a mentally ill man charged with killing three people at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic in 2015 because it offered abortion services can be forcibly medicated. Monday's ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit upheld an order issued by a federal judge in 2022 allowing Robert Dear to be given medication for delusional disorder against his will to try to make him well enough to stand trial. Dear’s federal public defenders challenged the order in part because it allows force to also be potentially used to get Dear to take medication or undergo monitoring for any potential side effects to his physical health.

Luke Deco*ck: Swing and two misses: Pinehurst, perhaps alone in golf, has somehow eluded Tiger Woods

  • Luke Deco*ck - The News & Observer (TNS)

PINEHURST, N.C. — There was one brief moment of hope, of sudden anticipation, when Tiger Woods made a short birdie putt on the 72nd hole, 19 years ago Sunday. The sun was setting, church bells rang in the village and dust blew across the 18th fairway at Pinehurst No. 2 in the gloaming, but f…

The US cricket team is closing in on a major achievement at the Twenty20 World Cup

  • By CHRIS LEHOURITES - AP Sports Writer

The United States national cricket team already made a dent in the hierarchy of the game by beating Pakistan last week at the Twenty20 World Cup. The team’s next game is set for Wednesday against India outside New York at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. The Americans aren’t expected to win that one, but neither were they expected to beat Pakistan. The U.S. team has a good chance to advance to the quarterfinal round at the tournament with another match against Ireland still to come on Friday. Pakistan needs to beat Ireland on Sunday to have a chance of advancing.

Biden administration seeks to wipe consumer medical debt off most credit reports with proposed rule

  • By TOM MURPHY - AP Health Writer

The Biden administration is pushing to prevent medical debt from being considered in most decisions made over whether someone qualifies to rent an apartment, buy a car or take on a mortgage. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says it is planning a rule that would remove medical bills from most credit reports and prevent lenders from making decisions based on medical information. The proposed rule also would prevent lenders from repossessing medical devices like wheelchairs if people cannot repay a loan. A senior administration official says they expect to finalize the rule early next year.

Former Trump attorney in Wisconsin suspended from state judicial ethics panel

  • By SCOTT BAUER - Associated Press

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has suspended former President Donald Trump’s Wisconsin lawyer from a state judicial ethics panel a week after he was charged with a felony for his role in a 2020 fake electors scheme. Liberal advocates have been calling for Jim Troupis to step down from the Judicial Conduct Advisory Committee. They say he is unsuitable due to his role advising Republicans who attempted to cast Wisconsin’s electoral votes for Trump after he lost the 2020 election there. Troupis, a former judge, another Trump attorney and a former Trump aide were charged by state Attorney General Josh Kaul last week for their role in the fake electors plot.

The Royals recalled outfielder Drew Waters and infielder Nick Pratto from Triple-A Omaha to take their place. Dog fight! Joey Chestnut out of July 4 hot dog eating contest due to deal with rival brand

  • By CEDAR ATTANASIO - Associated Press

Organizers of America’s perennial July Fourth hot dog swallowing contest say the reigning champion won’t compete this year due to a contract dispute. 40-year-old Joey “Jaws” Chestnut has been competing since 2005 and hasn’t lost since 2015. At last year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest he downed 62 franks and buns in 10 minutes. Organizers said Tuesday Chestnut struck a deal with a competing brand, a red line for the Nathan’s-sponsored event. Those vying for second place in the past might have renewed hope to swallow their way to first this year, including international competitors on the eating circuit.

Olympic veterans Christopher Blevins and Haley Batten lead US mountain bike team for Paris Games

  • By DAVE SKRETTA - AP Sports Writer

Olympic veterans Christopher Blevins and Haley Batten will lead the U.S. mountain bikers next month at the Paris Games. Riley Amos and Savilia Blunk round out the four-person lineup announced by USA Cycling. The discipline of off-road bike racing was largely invented in the U.S., but Americans were long ago lapped by European nations when it came to the Olympics. Since its introduction at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, the U.S. has won only two of the 42 medals awarded, and both were bronze. But there are high hopes for Paris after American riders have become a mainstay on World Cup podiums.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow not rushing rehab of his surgically repaired wrist

  • AP

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has dealt with multiple injuries in his first four years in the NFL, so he’s learned plenty about what it takes to come back from them. And he knows not to rush the rehab process. That's why he's taking it slow this summer with his surgically repaired right wrist. Burrow is throwing during the team's mandatory minicamp, but he knows the goal is to be healed and ready by the opening of training camp in late July. After pushing through the difficult spots while rehabbing in the past, Burrow says he's being more patient and methodical this time.

Jay-Z's Roc Nation to drum up support for private school vouchers in Philadelphia

  • AP

Jay-Z is putting his weight behind an effort to fund private school vouchers in Philadelphia. The entertainment mogul’s Roc Nation announced it is funding a campaign this month to drum up support for the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success. That's a statewide legislative proposal to spend taxpayer money on private school scholarships for low-income families in neighborhoods with low-achieving schools. Vouchers are controversial in many states — including Pennsylvania, where Republicans promote them as a way to help students escape underperforming schools, and teachers unions, school boards and many Democrats oppose sending taxpayer money to private and religious schools. Jay-Z’s support of the voucher bill is drawing pushback online.

Haiti’s transitional council appoints new Cabinet tasked with leading a country under siege by gangs

  • By EVENS SANON and DÁNICA COTO - Associated Press

Haiti’s transitional council has appointed a new Cabinet. It’s the final step in rebuilding the government in a country under siege by gangs. Carlos Hercules, the attorney for new Prime Minister Garry Conille, is the minister of justice and public security. Conille will be interior minister. Jean Marc Berthier Antoine will be defense minister. Haiti struggles with gangs that control at least 80% of the capital of Port-au-Prince. The country is preparing for the U.N.-backed deployment of a police force from Kenya. The new Cabinet has four women, and critics note that Haiti’s government barely has female representation.

Analysis: Jon Rahm playing on one bad foot and trying to move past two bad weeks in the majors

  • By DOUG FERGUSON - AP Golf Writer

Jon Rahm is getting attention at the U.S. Open for all the wrong reasons. That starts with the sandal on his left foot. He has an infection between the last two toes and it forced him to withdraw from a LIV Golf event in Houston last week. Then there's his performance, particularly in the majors. Rahm hasn't won since the 2023 Masters when he was still No. 1 in the world. He hasn't won in eight LIV events this year that have short fields. And after a pedestrian performance at the Masters, he missed the cut in the PGA Championship.

Federal appeals court weighs challenge to Iowa ban on books with sexual content from schools

  • By STEVE KARNOWSKI - Associated Press

Attorneys for LGBTQ+ youth, teachers and major publishers have asked a federal appeals court to affirm a lower court order that blocked key parts of an Iowa law banning books depicting sex acts from school libraries and classrooms. The law being considered Tuesday also forbids teachers from raising gender identity and sexual orientation issues with younger students. The Republican-led Legislature approved the law last year. It resulted in the removal of hundreds of books from Iowa schools before a federal judge blocked it in December. Attorneys for the state argued Tuesday the law is constitutional and that the state has a right to enforce it.

Celtics' Porzingis has tendon issue in lower left leg, hasn't been ruled out of Game 3 of NBA Finals

  • AP

Kristaps Porzingis has a dislocated tendon in his lower left leg but hasn’t been ruled out for Game 3 of the NBA Finals for the Boston Celtics against the Dallas Mavericks. The team says the injury to Porzingis occurred in the third quarter of Boston’s 105-98 victory in Game 2. It's unrelated to the right calf strain that sidelined the 7-foot-2 Latvian for 10 consecutive playoff games. The team calls injury rare and says Porzingis’ availability is day-to-day. Boston takes a 2-0 series lead into Game 3 on Wednesday night in Dallas.
