Pickin' up the pieces of my sweet shattered dream
I wonder how the old folks are tonight
Her name was Ann and I'll be damned if I recall her face
She left me not knowin' what to do

Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Turnin' back the pages to the times I love best
I wonder if she'll ever do the same
Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied
With knowin' I got no one left to blame

Carefree highway, I got to see you my old flame
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Searchin' through the fragments of my dream-shattered sleep
I wonder if the years have closed her mind
I guess it must be wanderlust or tryin' to get free
From the good old faithful feelin' we once knew

Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen the better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you
Let me slip away on you

Carefree highway, I got to see you my old flame
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

    This song should be one of the top 500 ever written. It is a great song about innocence lost. He once rode on the 'carefree highway' of life with this girl. Well, it turns out life isn't so carefree. He's wondering what life's highway is bringing her and if she ever thinks about their time together in a simpler more carefree time.

    Every time I hear this great song I want to get drunk while reminiscing. I say top 100 ever written, joining Sundown & If You Could Read My Mind.

    so the lyrics are pretty obvious, but i had to comment because i love gordon lightfoot:

    he hits the road thinking about a relationship that went bad. it's obviously something that happened a long time ago ("I wonder if the years have closed her mind") but feels like it was just yesterday ("The mornin' after blues") and as a result it still haunts him.

    My Opinion

    Just so powerfully poignant; never fails the tears flow when I read those lyrics;

    ========

    The needless loss that cant be regained,

    and no one else left to blame.

    ========

    Could someone add the copyright date? ty.

    One of my favorite lines of all time: "Searchin' through the fragments of my dream-shattered sleep".......................Wow.....I had a similar experience with a woman I once was close to.....I could not see her face. Finally found a photo of her....but like Gord said: "I'll be damned if I recall her face"........isn't that weird?

    This is what I hear: I think Lightfoot is saying that he took the Carefree Highway by cheating on Ann - that's why he has "the morning after blues from my head down to my shoes". And the Carefree Highway left him not knowin what to do. He wants her to forget about his mistake: "Turnin' back the pages to the times I love bestI wonder if she'll ever do the same"

    Lightfoot wrote this song as he was approaching 40 years old. Right off he mentions the old folks. His mother recognized his talent as a young child. Ann was his grandmother who had worried about his chosen career.

Ave Grave Thee More Shallows So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation. Jesse with the long hair.... Robert Earl Keen, Jr. Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's. Standing On The Edge Of Summer Thursday In regards to the meaning of this song:Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul. The Night We Met Lord Huron This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:"I had all and then most of you"Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart"Some and now none of you"Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why" Holiday Bee Gees @[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
