Our relationship with the healthcare professionals and communities in Uganda is long-term. The dental capacity is Kalangala District is very limited and the needs are great. Part of our commitment is to work closely with the local government to bridge this gap.Meet Frank, now a part of the BTH family! Frank has been participating in our outreaches since he was a dental student, getting hands-on experience, improving his skills outreach after outreach! Today, Frank is a dental officer who serves his community daily. He still continues to give back by volunteering his time and skills to the communities in Kalangala District, Uganda. Frank is passionate about dentistry and giving back to his community.

You may ask, how do we ensure that the knowledge stays in the district of Kalangala, Uganda so that even after our outreaches, the communities can have access to healthcare. Today, we want to feature Simon, a third year medical student at Kampala International University. Simon's dream of becoming a medical doctor started at age 13 when he saw all the healthcare needs in Uganda and the challenges with the healthcare systems. Simon has participated in two outreaches so far where he has received hands-on experience on the use of the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) device. During our outreaches, we use the POCUS device as a tool to better screen and make real-time medical decisions for pregnancy complications, traumatic injuries, pneumonia etc. Simon has been introduced to the device and how to use it while participating in our outreaches. He gets to work closely with our Head of Ultrasound and Medical Lead, Dr. Ami Kurzweil. Virtual training and assessment continues even after the outreach ends. At the end of our 2024 outreach, we are safe to say Simon is now equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to use the POCUS device.After university, Simon will continue to provide healthcare to communities in Uganda and will be able to utilize the POCUS device in his practice. This is sustainable healthcare in action. The hands-on experience from the outreaches has further inspired Simon, who is now eager to pour back into his community.Our relationship with the district of Kalangala is long-term and sustainable. Come February 2025, we will work alongside the team of healthcare professionals at the Kalangala Health Center IV to conduct 8 days of free specialized medical and dental services to the community of Kalangala. Reflecting on the amazing outcomes of our 7-day medical and dental outreach in Kalangala, Uganda! With the dedication of 70 volunteers, including local practitioners and the Bridge to Health team, we provided free medical and dental care to over 3000 patients. Additionally, 15 medical and dental students gained hands-on experience and capacity building.
